Before you start
Check your pot’s instructions and stove compatibility. Moka pots brew to their own size; use the full basket rather than scaling by mug size.
Brew on the stove
- Fill the lower chamber with water to just below the safety valve. Keep the valve clear.
- Fill the basket and level the coffee. Do not tamp or compress it.
- Clear grounds from the rim. Assemble firmly and place on low-to-medium heat. Keep the handle away from the flame.
- Watch for coffee to flow into the upper chamber. Lower the heat if the flow becomes aggressive.
- When the flow turns pale or begins to sputter, remove the pot from the heat using a heatproof handle or mitt. Pour and enjoy.
After brewing
Let the pot cool completely before opening. Clean and dry it according to the maker’s instructions. Check the gasket and safety valve regularly.
One useful thing
Moka makes strong coffee, but it does not make espresso. Try a splash of warm milk.
