Start with your machine

Check the basket and reservoir capacities. Use the filter size the maker recommends.

Make a small batch

  1. Use a clean basket and carafe. Add a fresh filter if your machine uses paper.
  2. Measure 30 g of medium-ground coffee into the basket.
  3. Add 500 ml of fresh drinking water. Run the normal cycle.
  4. Pour soon after brewing. For keeping it hot, a thermal carafe usually tastes better than a long stay on a hot plate.

The next improvement

Keep the dose fixed for a few mornings. If it tastes weak, use a little more coffee. If it seems stale despite fresh beans, check the cleaning and descaling instructions.

One useful thing

The “cup” markings on many machines are smaller than a mug. Measure the water once so you know what you are brewing.
