Your coffee stop

Davis Street Espresso

Oak Cliff · 819 W Davis St, Dallas, TX 75208

Start your Dallas coffee outing with one stop rather than a long checklist. Davis Street Espresso is Oak Cliff Coffee Roasters’ neighborhood café, with communal tables, a patio, and no Wi-Fi. Bring a book or a friend and give the coffee a little attention. Ask what brewed coffee is available and which beans are being served. Sip before adding milk or sugar. Notice whether the cup feels light or full, whether its brightness reminds you of fruit, and what flavor stays after a sip. If you prefer milk drinks, order your usual and notice how clearly the coffee comes through. Before buying beans, tell the barista how you brew at home and ask for a suitable starting recipe. The café’s official page currently lists Sunday as closed; check before setting out.

Bring the idea home.

Bring home a small bag of the coffee you enjoyed, if available. Start with the French press recipe: 30 g coffee, 500 g water, a medium-coarse grind, and a four-minute steep. Pour everything out after pressing. Taste warm, then again as it cools. Your press may give a different texture from the café’s brewer, so aim for a cup you enjoy rather than an exact copy. Record the beans, ratio, grind, and one flavor word. Use the recipe calculator for a smaller batch, and change only one thing on your next brew.

Three notes to take.

  • What coffee or drink did you order?
  • What did you notice before adding anything?
  • What would you like to try in your next home cup?
